4:41 PM Study Techniques that a Science Student should follow |
Introduction I have seen that many students work really very hard but still they do not get desired success in exams and entrance tests. Main reason for this is : wrong techniques used by such students in their studies. MISTAKES COMMITTED BY MOST STUDENTS Most students work hard to understand a chapter but they seldom revise that chapter once it is finished. They simply direct all their efforts to understand new and new chapters without ever thinking to revise the already studied chapters. Therefore by the time they are through with the half of the book, they have already forgot the first chapter. So when any exam arrives and they begin to finally asses their preparation, they find much to their horror that they don't recall anything from most of the initial chapters. And then they become panicky and are forced to again study those chapters afresh in haste. Consequently they do not go to write the exam with confidence although they had worked hard from the very beginning. Obviously they obtain low marks in the exam and get very disheartened. This lowers their selfconfidence. And most students lose all their hope of ever doing good in exams. Most such students blame their fate for this. But very few understand the real problem in their studying techniques because of which they don't do good in exams despite all the hard works that they did.
How to Study Choose a good text book in each subject. Study the text of a chapter from the book. If you find difficulty in understanding the concepts thoroughly by reading a book then don't buy more books, you need a good teacher to teach you. While reading the text of a chapter you should sincerely read all the solved examples that are given in between. After the chapter is finished read all the solved examples that are given at the end of that chapter in your book. Now start solving exercise problem. In the beginning it would be better if you do only easy questions. This would increase your confidence and understanding. Once you are capable of solving easy questions of that chapter, you should move on to study the next chapter. Along with studying that next chapter try to do 4 to 5 lengthy questions from the previous chapter every day. If you can't solve few such questions then don't worry much, ask your teacher to explain you the detailed solution of all such questions. After some days you will have finished the next chapter and you will also find that your problem solving skills for the last chapter is now greatly improved. Now you should read the solved examples of this newly finished chapter start solving easy exercise problems of it in a way in which you did after finishing the previous chapter. Once you are able to solve easy questions of this chapter you should move to the third chapter ..... and so on. While you are studying the theory of any chapter you should practice 4 to 5 tough questions every day of the chapter just preceding that chapter. Apart from that you should reserve one day every week exclusively for revising all the chapters that you have already studied. On this day you should speedily revise the theory of all those chapters. Practice all the important derivations in those chapters. Revise all the definitions and formulae contained in them. You should randomly do 4 to 5 questions from each of the already studied chapters on this day. In this way you will always remember all the chapters of the syllabus that you have finished. You will never be required to do any extra work for preparing for any exam. Since you have been in continuous touch with all the chapters therefore your mental understanding of the concepts of those chapters will become very strong with time. Following this routine will require you to have some self discipline. But once you follow this, you will see magical improvement in your overall performance as a student. |
