IIT Council Scraps CBSE’s Proposal of Conducting JEE-Main Twice a Year

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Council shows a red signal to the CBSE’s proposal of conducting Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) - Main twice a year from next sessions, said the sources.
Earlier, CBSE had planned a proposal to hold the JEE - Main two times in a year, in the months of February and April from next academic year. The board had come up with this plan thinking to offer Engineering aspirants a chance to improve their scores in the JEE-Main.
But the new proposal was opposed by students, parents and teachers, saying this will affect the class 12 students’ performance in Board Exams.
The council members have also agreed to the fact that holding the JEE-Main twice a year would increase the academic pressure on students. However, the official announcement is yet to be made.
Students support the IIT council’s decision of refusing the CBSE proposal. However, this must be disappointing for those who were hoping two attempts to improve their scores and get entries into top class Engineering Institutes like IITs, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad and NITs.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are scheduled to be conducted on 06 April 2014 and 25 May 2014, respectively, for the next session.

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) that met on 15 September, have decided to continue with the offline format (paperand pencil) of JEE Advanced for the next year, 2014.

JAB has also decided that the JEE-Advanced 2014 will be held on 25 May, 2014. The date will soon be announced officially. JEE Main 2014 is tentatively scheduled to take place on 6 April, 2014. The official dates for JEE Main will soon be confirmed by CBSE.

Meanwhile, JAB has decided against an online JEE Advanced this year. They will also soon set up a committee to study the online process and implement it in future.

MUMBAI: The Joint Admission Board of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), which met on Sunday, has decided not to have a computer-based JEE-Advanced 2014. Instead, aspirants will have a paper-pencil test. The board will also soon set up a committee to study the online process and implement it in future.

Members of the board, which is the highest body that takes decisions on admissions to IITs, said that the JEE-Advanced 2014 will be conducted as it was in 2013.

"There will no changes for the 2014 exams. We will follow a systematic approach before implementing the computer-based test. The board will set up a committee to study the online process and only then will implement it in future," said NK Panigrahi, JEE-Advanced 2014 chairman.

While it has been decided that the JEE-Advanced 2014 will be held on May 25—a week in advance compared to last year—an official announcement will be made soon. While the JEE-Main may be conducted on April 6, 2014, CBSE, which conducts the exam, will soon announce the date.

Engineering aspirants had dealt with much confusion this year when the single Joint Entrance Examination for IIT (IIT-JEE) was split into two - JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. Now if that weren't enough, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducts the JEE Mains, is planning to conduct JEE Main twice a year for 2014 - one in February and the other in April.

The final call on this will be taken at a meeting of the Joint Entrance Examination Apex body on 17 September.

The logic is that candidates can take both the exams and the best score of the two will be considered for the JEE-Advanced. Students get a second chance.

An extra test will add to the long list of exams that students have to appear for, adding to the exam preparation pressure on them. The February JEE will clash with the state board, CBSE & ICSE board exams. Students of ICSE and state board will bear the brunt of this as they will have to separately study portions of the CBSE syllabus to prepare for the first of the JEE Mains.

The CBSE official assured that they would schedule the JEE-Main exam in February without letting it clash with the February board exams. But the pressure of the extra exam would always remain.
